September 9 – The High Atlas Mountains near Marrakech, Morocco, witnessed a devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake on Friday night. This seismic activity, the most powerful in over a century, led to the tragic loss of over 1,000 lives.
Deepmala Mahla, CARE’s Vice President of Humanitarian Affairs, remarked on the severity of the situation, “Many in Morocco were already grappling with challenges prior to the earthquake. Their already constrained lives have been turned upside down, and hundreds of thousands have now lost everything they held dear.”
In the immediate aftermath of such calamities, the initial 72 hours are pivotal for rescue operations. However, the rugged terrain of the affected region severely hampers the speed and effectiveness of these life-saving efforts. With the challenges presented by the mountains, rescuers are largely limited to using helicopters or donkeys to access the devastated areas.
Locals speak of the dire circumstances they find themselves in, with one woman lamenting to CNN, “There is no one here to assist in retrieving the dead from the rubble... the village's state is heart-wrenching.”
Many nations and regions have swiftly stepped up to show their support. Generous pledges include a $2.1 million donation from several French regions, with countries like Algeria, Turkey, Germany, and the U.S. extending their hands to assist in any capacity required.
CARE, a renowned nonprofit group, has been at the forefront of these relief efforts. They are channeling funds to provide essentials like water, food, shelter, and medical assistance to those affected. “Our response strategy is centered around supporting the most vulnerable segments of the population, including women, girls, the elderly, young families, and those who might find it difficult to access mainstream emergency services,” CARE elaborated on their donation page designated for the Morocco emergency response.
With an illustrious history of serving humanity, CARE has been instrumental in providing aid to 174 million people across 111 countries over the past 75 years. In this hour of need, the organization urges individuals to contribute by donating cryptocurrency.
